We enjoyed having May Flaum as our special guest last night for unKit Live!
Today May shares with us a beautiful Vintage Project and gives us some great tips for working with Vintage.
“Princess Lunch”
Gather some supplies and enjoy! In this layout I used the strip of lace to anchor pearls, buttons, and all kinds of treasures. My photo is 4 x 6, and the mat it’s on is 8 x 10. I gathered bits and pieces selectively and edged the blue paper (with blue ink) as well as outlined my title letters for more pop.
supplies:
Kaiser Craft “Devonshire” patterned papers, lace, brad, rhinestones, and pearls; www.shopevalicious.com dictionary paper button flowers; October Afternoon stickers (letters); Bella Blvd big flower; Making Memories journaling paper; American Crafts pen;
Tips for working with “vintage inspired” looks:
- Work with patterns, colors, and products that you enjoy. Don’t get caught up in being trendy!
- Watch for fabric, trims, and other inexpensive items at the craft or fabric store outside the scrapbook isle
- Mix and match based on feel and color, don’t fence yourself in. Often something can be mixed in with more modern or neutral products
- Enjoy the process! Always. It should be fun
- Keep in mind that there is no one (or even five) “vintage” looks. It all depends on what the creator is being inspired by – there’s a whole world out there!
- Stay true to what you like. Not everything will appeal or work for you – that’s ok!
- Don’t force yourself into B&W photos if you don’t love them. The products you use should work for you, you shouldn’t have to work for them.
- Make your own stuff up! Use what you have on hand, look up some photos from a time period you’re inspired by and make up your own vintage scrap.
- You don’t have to ink or distress it up if you don’t want to.
- A vintage inspired look can be whatever YOU want it to! Don’t get fenced in by labels.
You can find May teaching at The Big Picture Scrapbooking. Be sure to check out her latest class, Camp Scrap. It looks like summer fun is in store.
You will want to check out May’s blog, too. May Flaum’s Blog. It is a great place to garner inspiration.
May will be back with us on the blog tomorrow. See you then.
