Martha Stewart Crafts – Scoring Board

Every since Martha Stewart (via EK Success) came out with their new scoring board, the scrapbooking and stamping message boards have been buzzing about it.
What makes this scoring board so different and so buzz-worthy?
- This full twelve and a half inches of creamy board is extremely light-weight. This makes it an ideal scoring board for tossing in your bag for a crop. It is very portable.
- The scoring indentions are marked 1/8th of an inch apart. Many papercrafters are in love with this feature. It is close enough to make scores for mainstream envelopes and cards. Unlike other scoring boards with just 1/4 inch, there is no need to scoot the paper down to get the right mark. This feature makes this scoring board easy to use (and takes the math anxiety out of the equation).
- Another feature that is well-received is the overall design. There is a convenient storage for your bone folder and triangular envelope template that is included with the board. The envelope template slides underneath the board. It slips in a perfectly sized slot on the bottom right side. It’s like parking the batmobile in the batcave. Smooth and easy. It fits flush with the edge. So much so, at times I forgot where that little triangle was sometimes. It is easy to take out as well. The bone folder has it’s own home as well. The top compartment lifts to reveal an 11-inch place for storage. I have been also leaving a black pen and pencil in this compartment. A few have expressed difficulty in opening this compartment. But I found it easy to open. I love that I have a place for my two loose items so that (theoretically) I won’t lose them.
- The board also comes with a book of measurements for boxes and cards. There is a sticker fixed to the inside of the bone folder compartment, which is very handy. (There are instructions in Spanish on a sticker that you can replace the English one.) Again, this is great so that I will not have to go searching for this information. Plus, the envelope template has printed right on it standard envelope measurements and markings. They include #1, 4 bar, A2, A6, A7, A9, 6″ square, and #10.
- Included is an envelope template. I just love that this is included and has its own home. Using it was so easy. Its teeth grab to board for a steady position.
- The markings on the scoring board is clearly marked in inches and 1/8″ increments. The numbering is on top of the mark which makes it easy to understand. Across the top in black are left to right up to 12 1/2 inches. Also marked are measurements from the center out to the left and to the right. These are in Martha’s signature green. Down the left side, there is a hard return that is marked in black from the top to the bottom up to 12 1/2 inched.
- There is no edge, sometimes referred to as a “return,” on the right. I like this because when I need to slide my paper to the right, there is no obstruction. I like the fact that there is no right return.
- As mentioned before, although it is marketed as a portable scoring board, it is full sized, measuring twelve inches plus. Perfect for the standard twelve by twelve scrapbooking papers.
- Some mention has been made in the social media regarding the depth of the indentation. Some papercrafters had problems with the bone folder jumping the tracks and skipping over into the next indentation. I could see where this could happen. I am not a quick scorer. I like strong sure scores. I did not have a problem.
- A bone folder is included with the scoring board. It is made of sturdy material, and nestles in its own compartment that is part of the scoring board. (as mentioned above) It not as stiff as my other bone folder, more flimsy. It will bend some. I tried other bone folders in the scoring board. They definitely jumped into the next indentation and made for a mess. (The manufacturer recommends that you use the bone folder that comes with the board.)
- The price is about twenty dollars. I have seen it online and in stores anywhere from $24 to $19.99. It is a great price. For just twenty bucks, everyone can afford to have a scoring board. Like the the politicians’ promise of a “chicken in every pot,” this scoring board from Martha Stewart will make it possible for us to have a scoring board in every scraproom.
Overall, I really like this board. It will enable you to easily score crisp lines for all of your paper projects. And you cannot beat this price. It is a good value.
